Craig Comments on the Passing of Sen. Paul Simon

WASHINGTON, DC - Idaho Senator Larry Craig reacted to the death Tuesday of former Illinois Senator Paul Simon at the age of 75 years:

"The nation lost a loyal friend with the passing of Paul Simon. He was an outstanding public servant who always respected the wisdom of the American people and his Illinois constituents.

"While millions of people may have identified him by his bowtie, his Congressional colleagues identified him by his gentlemanly spirit and common sense. When Paul agreed with you, he was a valued and trusted ally. When he disagreed with you, he was unfailingly courteous. He fought fairly and elevated the tone of every debate. He loved his family and his country and placed principle above partisanship.

"It was my privilege to serve with Paul Simon for 16 years in the House and Senate. Though from different political parties, we worked closely together on the Balanced Budget Amendment, and he was a vital part of our success in balancing the budget in the late 1990s. Although he retired from the Senate, he remained very active in politics and academics. He will be missed by all who knew him."
